Methods used for air pollution assessment in Zagreb, Croatia


Sulphur dioxide

Sampling: Whatman No 1 filter paper, flow rate 1.5 L/min, 24 hour sampling
          period,  absorption media 1% H2O2.
Analysis: Standard British method, correction for NH3 content at Djordjiceva and B. Filipovica measuring sites, sulphate method at mesuring site Susedgrad.

Black smoke

Sampling: Whatman No 1 filter paper, flow rate 1.5 L/min, 24 hour sampling period.
Analysis: EEL reflectometer

Nitrogen dioxide

Sampling: Passive samplers (IMI), Whatman No 1 filter paper, adsorption media triethanolamine and acetone (1:1)
Analysis: Colorimetric method (Griess-Illosway)

Ammonia:

Sampling: Whatman No 1 filter paper, flow rate 1.5 L/min, 24 hour sampling period, absorption media 1% H2O2.
Analysis: Nessler³s method

Total suspended particulates

Sampling: Membrane filter paper (102 mm diameter, pore size 0.3 um), flow rate 250 m3/day.
Analysis: Gravimetric method

Metal content Pb, Fe, Mn, Cu, Cd, Zn, in total suspended particulates

Sampling: Membrane filter paper (102 mm diameter, pore size 0.3 um), flow rate 250 m3/day.
Analysis: AAS method (exstraction by HNO3, EDTA treatment)
